Utopia FM broadcasts from the multi-million pound Media Centre, part of the University of Sunderland Skillset Media Academy. It's a centre of excellence for the study of media and a great place to learn about Radio.
If you're interested in courses about radio, all of which allow you access to Utopia FM through assessed placements, projects etc then we have a range of courses from Foundation Degree to Masters on offer.
Foundation Degree in Community Radio
A brand new course at FD level which allows you to spend time on Community Radio stations, whether this is ours or one you're already working for is up to you! You'll learn a range of radio skills from basic editing to writing, recording and producing radio dramas, documentaries or commercials
BA Media Production (TV & Radio)
Our most popular course and part of the Skillset Media Academy. The course covers all aspects of both Televison and Radio, giving a great range of technical, theoretical and analytical skills.
Ever fancied being the next Trevor McDonald or John Humphries? This could be the course for you. Covering all aspects of TV, Radio and online journalism students learn a huge range of skills in our new purpose built tri-media newsroom. Students on this course will spend time on placement and will have the opportunity to get on the air with Utopia FM
This is a one year course aimed at students who have already completed a Foundation Degree or a HND in radio or audio production. It 'top's up' that qualifaction to a full undergraduate degree. You'll make a major piece of radio work in any genre you choose, such as drama, documentary, live radio or even online radio.
MA Radio (production and management)
This course can be taken full or part time and is flexible enough to fit around work or family commitments. It's an advanced course that deals with the skills needed for todays radio marketplace, aimed at people wanting careers as producers or radio station managers..
